A Neurodevelopmental Perspective
on Differences in Learning

Understanding and Helping Children
Who Struggle With Their Own Wiring

Presented By
Mel Levine, M.D.

Director, Clinical Center for the Study of Development and Learning
University of North Carolina Medical School
Co-Chairman of the Board - All Kinds of Minds

Thursday & Friday - April 7 & 8, 2005

Lancaster Host Hotel - Lancaster, Pennsylvania

Program Description

The presentation will begin with an overview of the key areas of brain function and how these areas are expected to operate to foster optimal learning and productivity in school. Dr. Levine will describe a system for localizing specific breakdown points in the learning process. This system labels the phenomena instead of the child.

Mel (as he likes to be called) will focus on how students can be either productive or unproductive in schools. He will explore the various mechanisms underlying weak school performance and then provide a framework for enhancing children’s understanding and productivity during their years in school.

Mel will describe in detail the implications of a phenomenological approach for assessing children. His approach helps students by enabling them to understand the nature of their weaknesses. He also helps students by providing parents and teachers with practical management suggestions.

Mel will use a number of case examples to illustrate his model and principles. His handouts will include a series of guidelines for those who work with children having difficulty in school.
