Basic Certification in Grief Therapy
You can earn a Portland Institute for Loss and Transition (PI) Basic Certification in Grief Therapy by completing 3 specific J&K Seminars courses presented by Dr. Neimeyer, and a 3-hour Practicum Module.
This certification will document your expertise in serving clients contending with difficult loss, such as the death of a child or partner, or the tragic loss of a loved one to unanticipated or lingering illness, fatal accident, overdose, suicide, homicide or Covid-19.
Dr. Neimeyer, with the assistance of his PI staff, will conduct this Practicum Zoom Meeting with breakout rooms. We will limit registrations to ensure close faculty/participant mentoring. You must have completed all three of the following courses below before registering for this Practicum session. While we will schedule other Practicum Sessions, you only need to complete one Practicum session to qualify for the Grief Basic Certification.
Attendees will receive a J&K certificate for 3-hours professional CE credit good toward relicensing in addition to the Portland Institute for Loss and Transition (PI) Basic Certification in Grief Therapy.

- Grief Therapy as Meaning Reconstruction: A Trauma-Informed Approach (6 hours)

- Grief and Its Complications (6 hours)

We will schedule additional Practicum sessions later in the summer and fall.
You only need to complete one Practicum session to qualify for the Basic Certification in Grief Therapy. The Practicum registration fee is $99.
Learners completing all three courses plus the Practicum will receive Basic Certification in Grief Therapy directly from the Portland Institute and J&K Certificates for CE credit mental health professsionals can use for relicensing.
Learners interested in Full Certification will be offered advanced placement in any of PI’s four certification tracks:
- Grief Therapy as Meaning Reconstruction (GTMR)
- Family Focused Grief Therapy (FFGT)
- Arts-Assisted Grief Therapy (AAGT)
- Grief Therapy for Non-Death Losses (NDL)
